Karel Appel back in Amsterdam
In 1999, we joined Karel Appel in renovating and furnishing his new office, painting studio and ceramics studio on Lutmastraat in Amsterdam. After half a century, Appel back in Amsterdam. It was great to work with someone who had also worked with Oud, Rietveld, van Eyck, and many more. Who had drunk wine at La Coupole with Yves Klein and Armand. And who could name RAL colours separately.
Including sturdy handy tables with wheels for the painter's beast, in Beech and Padauk and in the kitchen terrazzo with mother-of-pearl glitter added. Hard and geometric. But cheerful and fresh. Attached as he was to his privacy, the photos are from just before completion and sadly at the "party" celebrating the dissolution of the studio, after his death.
